About us

The Bear is situated in the thriving market town of Hungerford of Georgian origin. A walk around the town and its immediate surrounding countryside will reveal the inherent charm of the area and much of the town has remained unaltered for generations.

The hotel has a fascinating royal history full of romance and character. Henry VIII owned the manor of Chilton Foliat in which The Bear Hotel lay, James 1 used The Bear as a headquarters during the English Civil War in1644 and Prince William of Orange, soon to be William III, was offered the crown of England at The Bear Hotel. All thirty-nine en-suite bedrooms are of individual design with a choice of compact doubles through to spacious suites with king-size beds. Some bedrooms have balconies and river views while others overlook the rooftops of Hungerford. All have Egyptian cotton sheets, bespoke toiletries, telephone, hair dryer, coffee and tea making facilities and remote controlled television. There is WI FI access throughout the hotel. We also welcome pets.

Under the guidance of Head Chef Phil Wild The Bear Hotel’s restaurant has garnered 2 AA rosettes and specialises in creating menus based on using the very best fresh, seasonal and local produce.
